23. SEVERED HEADS-“DEAD EYES OPENED” 12” (7/15) (***Severed Heads are one of the longest standing bands to have emerged from the Australian post-punk and experimental scene. They began in Sydney in 1979, and were an early outfit to incorporate elements of industrial noise-generation, tape-cutting and looping, and electronic sound synthesis. As the project developed, song-structures and vocals were employed in a more-or-less recognizable mutant electro pop style. After many lineup changes featuring Gary Bradbury and psychedelic guitarist Simon Knuckey, the project became the solo vehicle for composer Tom Ellard. In 1983 Severed Heads released a C-60 cassette called Since the Accident that grabbed the attention of Ink Records, a subsidiary of Virgin in the UK. Ellard added a throwaway track at the last minute to fill out the cassette, not wanting to leave an unseemly gap at the end. The song, "Dead Eyes Opened," was catchy enough to get a lot of airplay on the main noncommercial radio station in Sydney, and the band was asked to make it into a 12-inch single. For this extended version, Ellard and producer Patrick Gibson went to M-Squared studio and passed the multi-tracked recordings through various EQs and delays. "Dead Eyes Opened" features samples from a radio program narrated by Edgar Lustgarten, a crime journalist from England, referencing a double-murder case that occurred in 1924. The rhythms are made by a TR-808 drum machine and an SH-1 synthesizer. A KORG PolySix was used for strings and additional atmospheric elements. The lead solo was a Casiotone run through an Octaver foot pedal. On the B-side are two solo compositions, "Bullet" and "Mount," that Ellard recorded at Terse Tapes in 1982. All songs are remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Housed in the original jacket featuring the iconic photograph of a girl with a painted face wrapped in some cloth by Juilee Pryor, each copy includes a foldout newsprint poster with a large photo of the band wearing Art Unit skull shirts on one side and liner notes and press clippings on the other. 30 years later, Severed Heads are still paving the way for powerful, imaginative and challenging music.)

2014 NEW RELEASES 2014 WEEK # 28 JULY 8, 2014

JULY 8, 2014 (WEEK # 28)
1.    JAMES BLACKSHAW-“FANTOMAS: LE FAUX MAGISTRAT” (7/8) (***In celebration of the centenary of Louis Feuillade's Fantomas silent film series, JAMES BLACKSHAW was invited by Yann Tiersen to perform a live score to the fifth and final film, Le Faux Magistrat, at the beautiful and prestigious surroundings of the Theatre de Chatelet, Paris on October 31st 2013. Fantomas--a master of disguise and symbol of terror--is one of the most popular characters in French crime fiction, as well as a favorite with the avant-garde, particularly the surrealists. Tim Hecker, Amiina, Yann Tiersen and Loney Dear also performed during the event (which was broadcast live on the European ARTE channel) each bringing their own unique sonic perspective to the other installments in the series. Written during the course of a few months, Blackshaw drew influences from French impressionist composers, Brazillian guitar music, musique concrete and the works of other film composer such as David Shire and Pino Donaggio, to create a noirish score that is in turns sinister, quietly profound and thrilling. Personally invited by James Blackshaw, experimental musicians DUANE PITRE and SIMON SCOTT (SLOWDIVE) contributed drums, electronics, synth, bowed guitar, bass and more to Blackshaw's nylon string guitar and grand piano, with multi-instrumentalist CHARLOTTE GLASSON adding violin, vibraphone and several wind instruments to the 75 minute long work.(STREET DATE - 7/08/2014)
2.    BONNIE PRINCE BILLY AND THE CAIRO GANG-“WE LOVE OUR HOLE” (SINGLE) (7/8) (Empty Cellar is proud to announce the latest single by BONNIE PRINCE BILLY and THE CAIRO GANG, "We Love Our Hole" b/w "I'll be Alright." This latest product of their fruitful collaboration finds WILL OLDHAM and EMMETT KELLY sitting barefoot on a sand dune, plucking the last rays of an Australian sunset from the sky. These two songs were recorded for Spirit Of Akasha, a film/soundtrack celebrating 40 years of the classic 1971 Australian surf film Morning of the Earth. "We Love Our Hole", a warm and fuzzular take on the notorious Aussie localism, recalls the carefree back to earth acoustic jams on the original "Morning of the Earth" soundtrack. Twangy leads punctuate the bongo-driven tune (music by Kelly / lyrics by Oldham) exalting their hole... the kind of place you discover by following your bliss, "a cove where love is free". Unbridled, the duo's dueling voices find rare, compelling, moments of unison amidst rich harmonizing. The B-side, "I'll be Alright", is a stripped-down take of the Terry Hannagan song from the original soundtrack. Equally melancholy and reassuring, Hannagan's meditation on the drag of modern life is dispensed thoughtfully by Oldham in his fearless, self-assured, voice. The recording as a whole finds Oldham and Kelly stepping confidently across the beach, fully trusting each other in these songs as only seasoned brothers can. This 7" vinyl record comes packaged in a high-gloss photographic jacket featuring a golden still by Spirit Of Akasha filmmaker Andrew Kidman.  Limited to a single pressing of 1000 copies, this release is a perfect assurance that summer is coming through the clouds, and its music positively sparkles like a sun-lit sea. Bonus points: Each 7" comes with a special fart-cloud sticker drawn by the great Nathaniel Russell that you can place in the wind of your favorite Surfer pic!)

9.    STEVE EARLE-“LIVE IN NASHVILLE 1995” (7/8)
10. FRENCH STYLE FURS-“IS EXOTIC BAIT” (7/8) (French Style Furs ''Is Exotic Bait'' album came to fruition through a combination of fate, artistic vision and the spontaneity of three long-time friends. During frequent stops in NYC, Cold War Kids reunited with an LA compatriot from We Barbarians. One day during the sessions they passed a nearby Greenpoint storefront called French Style Furs. It was kismet. Maust and Warkentin began recording bass and drum tracks in the winter of 2013. Nathan Willett showed up with a large book of poems written by a 20th century monk. The collaboration that followed was uncharted territory; A recording project that began spontaneously to document a creative urgency. The inspiration behind the idea to use the poetry of Thomas Merton as the lyrics for the LP came from Willett's fascination with the mystic who wrote on social justice, pacifism and Eastern religion. These poems opened a door of possibilities for Willett to sing unhinged, and gave vision and direction to the album. ''Is Exotic Bait'' lent itself to more than just the voices and instruments of its three creators. They invited percussionist Stephen Hodges (Tom Waits, David Lynch), whose rhythms were essential on tracks like the David Byrne-esque ''Solitary Life.'' Vocals from Haley Dekle (Dirty Projectors), Zina, and Marika Dahlin helped to raise the reach of ''Man the Master'' and ''Bloodstream.'' And horn arrangements from Nick Kinsey and Wyndham Boylan-Garnett (Elvis Perkins in Dearland) fill out the flesh of songs like ''Clairvaux Prison.'' Producer Nick Launay possessed the group's ideal sensibility to mix the album. His work with PiL, Grinderman, Nick Cave, and Yeah Yeah Yeah's was the final touch. French Style Furs' ''Is Exotic Bait'' is the final product that can only result from a band that is clearly having fun while pushing itself. )

20. THE SKYGREEN LEOPARDS-“FAMILY CRIMES” (7/8)
21. JULIUS STEINHOFF-“FLOCKING BEHAVIOUR” (7/8) ("In the ever-expanding universe of deep house, Julius Steinhoff is far from being a stranger. Half of the dynamic duo Smallpeople, founder and one of the steersmen behind Hamburg's Smallville empire (record store/label/party curator around the globe) as well as a producer and DJ in his own right, Steinhoff is closely associated with a group of like-minded people that unite fresh ideas and individualism with a certain consciousness of tradition. That Flocking Behaviour is well embodied in Steinhoff's debut album of the same name. After a string of 12"s for the likes of Live at Robert Johnson, Geography, or his own-brand Smallville and the very well-received Smallpeople Salty Days, Julius Steinhoff makes a submission that is all his. Rooted in the elegiac variety of the big three (New York, Chicago & Detroit) and a romantic concept of house music that is at times utopian, the album gathers eight tracks that evoke late nights, hazy mornings and walks on thin air. But Flocking Behaviour is by no means anachronistic: tracks such as 'Under a Waterfall' could be made in just the same manner by a puerile Baby Ford in 1989 as they represent a swaying dancefloor in 2014. 'Treehouse' or the title-track Flocking Behaviour are experiences that make you feel like meeting new people who instantly greet you like old friends. With someone that works and lives in the here and now, Steinhoff seemingly has no interest in revisionism, complaints or antagonism, his approach is welcoming and caring, embracing and mesmerizing. Along the way, his musical apparatus never makes use of cheap tricks or antique clichés. Instead, he strips back a sometimes fat body to its emotional bones, resulting in a self-confident oeuvre that is as timeless as it is beautiful. Flocking Behaviour is one man's love letter to his musical passion." --Gerd Janson, May 2014; includes a 12-page offset paper booklet.)
22. WOLFGANG VOIGT-“RUCKVERZAUBERUNG 9 / MUSIK FUR KULTURINSTITUTIONEN” (7/8) (A fanfare of cautious grandeur rings out as if it were the opening for indeterminate festivities, only to be immediately reflected by itself. In ever new mirrors. In the hall of mirrors. The room inside a room inside a room. Time is a very elastic concept. Narcotic brass loops, almost imperceptibly modulating, reel towards infinity. A '70s Kraut electronics sequencer feeling coquets with James Last's muzak sound and Cheb musicians on Valium. Stoic, infinite, limp. Programmatic boredom as rhetorical device of befuddled bliss. Only the occasional cloud of atonality suggests the abyss behind the blue skies of (pop)ambientish other-worldliness. Limited pressing of 500 copies.)
23. THE WALKABOUTS-“NIGHTTOWN” (DELUXE EDITION 2-CD) (1997/2014)  + THE WALKABOUTS-“DEVIL’S ROAD” (DELUXE EDITION 2-CD) (1996/2014) (7/8) (Deluxe reissue of the 1996 classic from The Walkabouts, with re-worked and extended artwork plus a bonus CD containing five unreleased tracks from that period. Comes in a multifold digipak with a 16-page booklet. "For 30 years, The Walkabouts have written and sung about one of their main topics: America -- the origin and home of rock'n'roll. The Walkabouts scrutinize America as a mythic place spotlighted by desires and hopes, but also contradictions and inconsistencies. Singer-songwriter Chris Eckman and Carla Torgerson founded The Walkabouts in 1984 in Seattle. 1989 saw the release of their Sub Pop debut, finding themselves the only non-grunge band next to the likes of Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney. Ironically enough, the sound of The Walkabouts, the mixing of folk, Americana and country with the knowledge and energy of punk, survived the grunge hype of the '90s and became one of the most important and enduring musical genres of the following decades. In 1992, The Walkabouts and Sub Pop split but the band joined forces with Sub Pop Europe represented by Glitterhouse Records in Beverungen, Germany. After releasing two albums -- Devil's Road (1996) and Nighttown (1997) -- with Virgin Records, The Walkabouts returned again to their home Glitterhouse and have remained there from 1999 until today. 1996: The Walkabouts are standing at the edge of their career. Glitterhouse isn't the distribution partner of Sub Pop anymore and because of these changes the bond breaks and the band are in need of a new label. At that time, major labels still had a strong interest in signing indie-bands, and were open to investing reasonable amounts of money into their careers. Acts with an underground reputation were added to these label's rosters in order to raise the label's artistic profile and credibility. And so The Walkabouts were drafted, and in 1996 Devil's Road saw the light of day as the first of their two albums recorded for Virgin Records. Based on the higher production budget that the major-label provided, the band realized their long-held dream and added string arrangements to their somber folk-country ballads and dust-dry mid-tempo rockers. In cooperation with arranger Mark Nichols and the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, the strings were recorded in a radio studio in Warsaw that was still very 'Eastern Bloc.' Especially compared to Eckman's and Torgerson's rather stripped-down side project of those days, Chris & Carla, these songs come through almost overblown. But one has to admit something that goes for all The Walkabouts' albums: Devil's Road is another cornerstone on the neverending road the band has followed in search of the perfect song." --Albert Koch)

With CI, which stands for Corporate Identity, Diamond Version are fighting back against consumerist culture latent with brand slogans and insidious advertising. The band's debut album pairs blistering electronic rhythms, deconstructed techno and dread static with clipped slogans borrowed from advertising and marketing, in both lyrics and track titles such as "Science For A Better Life" and "Access To Excellence." Neil Tennant on “Were You There”.)
8.    ENO & HYDE-“HIGH LIFE” (7/1)
9.    FLESH EATERS-“A MINUTE TO PRAY A SECOND TO DIE” (1981/2014 REMASTERED & REISSUED) (7/1) (***The Flesh Eaters is the name behind one Chris Desjardins a.k.a. Chris D. Taking his stage name from a 1964 cult film, Chris D. wrote for legendary fanzine Slash in the late '70s and assembled the first of many Flesh Eaters lineups from heavyweights in the burgeoning L.A. punk scene. After releasing a ravenous EP and heart-ripping debut album, The Flesh Eaters unleashed their era-defining statement, A Minute to Pray A Second to Die.Originally released in 1981, A Minute to Pray brings together the greatest band in American rock history: Dave Alvin (Blasters) on guitar, John Doe (X) on bass, Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) on sax, along with Bill Batemen (Blasters) and DJ Bonebrake (X) providing the album's trademark percussive backbone. Chris D. leads the group like a man possessed. Through a series of grotesque vignettes, his lyrical prowess and indelible growl stand toe-to-toe with the music's powerful shifts. From opener "Digging My Grave" (resembling a diesel-charged Magic Band) to the gothic groove of "Divine Horsemen," each song is its own hairy beast. Inspired by African tribal music, '60s garage-rock churn and Funhouse-era Stooges swing, A Minute to Pray remains (according to author / archivist Byron Coley) "the best rock record ever recorded."This first-time vinyl reissue and long out-of-print CD release has been carefully remastered and features liner notes by Coley. Without a doubt, The Flesh Eaters will hypnotize a new flock of listeners in this millennium.)

Unfortunately, not all of those recordings have been available on these shores. Omnivore Recordings is proud to correct this with Sketches In Spain, 19 tracks pulled from two albums recorded and only available in Spain.
