JUNE 24, 2014 (WEEK #26)
1.    ALIEN ENSEMBLE-“ALIEN ENSEMBLE” (6/24)
2.    ANGEL-“TERRA NULL” (6/24)
3.    AUSTRA-“HABITAT 12” [EP] (IMPORT) (6/24)
4.    PETER MATTHEW BAUER-“LIBERATION” (6/24) (FROM THE WALKMEN)
5.    BLACK BANANAS-“ELECTRIC BRICK WALL” (6/24) (2014 release from the Alt-Rock band led by Royal Trux's Jennifer Herrema. ELECTRIC BRICK WALL is the follow-up to the band's 2012 album RAD TIMES EXPRESS IV. They do it because it's fun and it sounds rad. Brave new pop and lock-roll, played on the guitar simulator, the digital saw, auto tune and the blues synth. Tomorrow's hits played through yesterday for us here in the now. Includes the single 'Physical Emotions'.)
6.    DEETRON-“FABRIC 76” (6/24)
7.    GODFLESH-“DECLINE & FALL” (6/24)
8.    THE GUN CLUB-“FIRE OF LOVE” (6/24) (1981/2014 Fire of Love is the no-nonsense debut from blues-punk legends The Gun Club. Formed in 1979—when singer Jeffrey Lee Pierce taught a young Kid Congo Powers to play guitar—the band injects the Delta blues, rockabilly and ’60s garage with their own amplified fury.Originally released in 1981 on Slash’s sub-label Ruby Records, Fire of Love features the classic second lineup with Ward Dotson on guitar (replacing Powers, who left to join The Cramps) and The Bags’ rhythm section. Opener “Sex Beat” shakes and stutters through a dynamic slab of American rock ’n’ roll that reverberates throughout the album. “She’s Like Heroin to Me” is perhaps Pierce’s most famous paean to modern love, elevating him to raucous demigod of the underground. Take it straight from Chris D. of The Flesh Eaters, who (along with Tito Larriva of The Plugz) produced these sessions: “Fire of Love is probably the definitive record to come out of this roots revival movement. Several people have told me that record made them want to start a band and come to Los Angeles.” This long out-of-print CD release has been carefully remastered and features liner notes by Chris D.)
9.    THE GUN CLUB-“DESTROY THE COUNTRY” (6/24) (LIVE IN ITALY 1983)
10. GUSGUS-“MEXICO” (6/24) (An obvious fan favorite, GusGus' last full-length offering Arabian Horse exceeded all expectations and ranks among Kompakt's biggest bestsellers in recent years. Now, the core crew of Birgir Thorarinsson, Daníel Ágúst, Högni Egilsson, and Stephan Stephensen returns with new masterpiece Mexico: a hugely satisfying follow-up to past exploits and another step into the future of anthemic pop music. GusGus are dead set on maintaining the towering might of their songwriting, infusing the new album with the same luster as their earlier work, but presenting the deed with the snappiness and intricate production values needed for contemporary debauchery. From opening anthem "Obnoxiously Sexual," to the Existentialist shuffle of closing ballad "This Is What You Get When You Mess With Love," this album leaves no stone unturned on its journey to sonic bliss, delving ever deeper into its timeless melodies with every subsequent track. It's hard to pinpoint highlights from an album like Mexico, as each of those cuts stands well on its own without sacrificing its role in the ensemble. In a way, that's a good metaphor for GusGus itself, as this project again and again manages to successfully pool the forces from a group of exceptionally gifted individuals. Take "Sustain," "Airwaves" or "God-Application": drawing from influences as diverse as '80s synth pop, UK garage or '90s trance, each of these tracks showcases a unique identity but still interlocks with the overarching aesthetics of the album and its omnipresent penchant for brilliant pop hooks. Frequency-shifting house-stomper "Another Life" and deep string groover "This Is Not the First Time" might come closest to the predecessor's voluptuous textures, engaging in the same kind of floor-friendly agility against the backdrop of monumental synth washes. Interestingly enough, title-track "Mexico" is the only instrumental on the new full-length, fittingly bringing a more linear flair to the proceedings. Sporting the nuanced narration of a coherent artist album as well as the eager excitement of a great track selection, GusGus' latest holds the potential to become a source for many a personal best-of mixtape. All killer, no filler!)

14. PIERCES-“CREATION” (6/17)
15. SEVERED HEADS-“SINCE THE ACCIDENT” (Limited 180gm colored vinyl LP pressing of the Australian Electronic/Industrial band's 1983 album. The band was composed of many different members though it's existence but Tom Ellard has always been the constant since 1979 when he joined the band. The group's early recordings were characterized by manipulated tape loop experiments, cleverly modulated noise elements and repetition. This period is very well suited to the early industrial period. Over time, the sounds morphed into more melodic leanings with pop elements and more prominent synth leads and backbone. SINCE THE ACCIDENT exemplifies the transition point between experimental structure and loops into the catchy pop hooks that would later define such releases as ROTUND FOR SUCESS. Difficult to classify, it is a masterpiece of electronic music. The opening track 'Relic Of The Empire' is a slow sequenced magnificent piece with time-stretched samples overlaid with multiple tracks to create a symphony quite unlike anything heard before.) , “CITY SLAB HORROR” (Limited 180gm vinyl LP pressing of this 1985 album from the Australian Electronic outfit. Severed Heads are one of the most diverse and expert sound palette engineers and are also repeatedly overlooked and far underrated. Hailing from Sydney, Australia, they formed in 1979. The band was composed of many different members though it's existence but Tom Ellard has always been the constant since 1979 when he joined the band. CITY SLAB HORROR continues to carry the torch illustrating the evolving transition between experimental structure and loops into the catchy pop hooks that would later define such releases as ROTOUND FOR SUCCESS. This LP seems to move slightly into darker territory in general with its synth textures and slower tempo tracks but overall has a nice continuation feel from previous album SINCE THE ACCIDENT yet with obvious technological evolutions) (6/17) (OMG! SO AWESOME)
16. SHARK?-“SUMMER ALE” [EP] (6/17)
17. THE SOFT PINK TRUTH-“WHY DO THE HEATHEN RAGE?” (MATMOS MEMBER’S ODE TO BLACK METAL!) (6/17)
18. ALEXIS TAYLOR-“AWAIT BARBARIANS” (6/17) (FROM HOT CHIP)
19. VENETIAN SNARES-“MY LOVE IS A BULLDOZER” (6/17) (THE ALBUM COVER IS TOO MUCH! OMG!)
20. THE VERVE PIPE-“OVERBOARD” (6/17)
21. WHITE LUNG-“DEEP FANTASY” (6/17) (Deep Fantasy is the third album from the hard hitting rock n'' roll outfit, White Lung. After a year plus of near constant touring (w/ Iceage, Parquet Courts, Fucked Up) behind their sophomore album Sorry they slimmed down to a trio to record: vocalist Mish Way, drummer Anne-Marie Vassiliou and guitarist Kenneth William. The album was made primarily in their hometown of Vancouver, B.C. with producer Jesse Gander. They''re as confrontational as before, but they''ve opened their sound up just enough to draw listeners in before kicking them in the face. (In a good way.)

22. VARIOUS ARTISTS-“HORSE MEAT DISCO IV” (6/17)

Seventeen years and 10 albums later the band is getting ready to release their 11th studio album.. Johnson and his compatriots Scott Danbom (keyboards, violin, harmonies) Matt Pence (drummer, producer), Mark Hedman (bass, guitar) have made yet another incredible album. With CI, which stands for Corporate Identity, Diamond Version are fighting back against consumerist culture latent with brand slogans and insidious advertising. The band's debut album pairs blistering electronic rhythms, deconstructed techno and dread static with clipped slogans borrowed from advertising and marketing, in both lyrics and track titles such as "Science For A Better Life" and "Access To Excellence." Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys guests on “Were You There”)
10. JOHN DOE-“THE BEST OF JOHN DOE: THIS FAR” (6/3)
11. ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN-“METEORITES” (6/3)
12. FU MANCHU-“GIGANTOID” (6/3)
13. FUCKED UP-“GLASS BOYS” (6/3)
14. GOLD-BEARS-“DALLIANCE” (6/3) (Gold-Bears' second full-length, ''Dalliance'' is a record about regret. It reminds you of that time you lied to your friend when you said you were too busy to hang out, but instead went to the bar alone. Or when you sent that really sh***y email to your brother about something that really has no bearing anymore, because you were too caught up in the moment to think clearly. It also reminds you of the time you got divorced....from whatever or whomever. In the past two years since Gold-Bears released their debut album, ''Are You Falling In Love?'', main Bear Jeremy Underwood gathered a new crop of friends to carry out his fuzz-filled visions. ''Dalliance'' is more focused and abrasive than that 2011 debut, combining their noise-pop influences from forebears like Boyracer and The Wedding Present with shades of the post-hardcore, emo and post-punk on which the band all cut their musical teeth. This not to say the Gold-Bears gave up impossibly catchy song-writing, just that their signature indie punk anthems are now even sharper, the guitars even more slashing, and the songs even more harrowing and heartfelt than ever. ''Dalliance'' opens with the anthemic ''Yeah, Tonight,'' a proper pop song featuring a duet between Underwood and Emma Cooper (of the defunct London indiepop band Standard Fare) that sets the agenda right away--sharp melodies and even sharper guitars, all whizzing by in less than three minutes. ''Chest'' rushes in almost immediately after, barely two and a half minutes of punk energy and fizzing feedback. ''Punk Song No. 15'' is as described, a blazing flash that condenses the history of UK noisy pop into just over one minute. ''I Hope They're Right'' and the lovely, jangling ''Hey Sophie'' show how much the band have expanded their range, slowing the pace, turning up the jangle and taking on the big subjects. Gold-Bears cover a lot of territory, musical and lyrical, in ''Dalliance'''s 32 minutes and by the time that we reach the miniature epic of closer ''Fathers And Daughters'' we realize that we're watching a band and a songwriter hit their stride, turning in an album that's exciting, thoughtful and infectious.)
15. LUKE HAINES-“NEW YORK IN THE ‘70S” (6/3)
16. JOE HENRY-“INVISIBLE HOUR” (6/3)
17. JOYWAVE-“HOW DO YOU FEEL?” [EP] (6/3)
18. KING BUZZO-“THIS MACHINE KILLS ARTISTS” (6/3) (Buzz Osborne, the legendary grunge progenitor who has helmed the Melvins for thirty plus years, releases his debut solo full-length album, This Machine Kills Artists. This Machine Kills Artists is a different kind of animal. Rolling Stone gave listeners early access to music from Osborne's acoustic release, premiering the song Dark Brown Teeth . The magazine described the song as doomy, ill-angled and with the Beefheartian edge his band is renown for.)
19. LED ZEPPELIN-“1”, “2”, “3” (DELUXE 2-CD EDITIONS) (6/3)
20. HAMILTON LEITHAUS-“BLACK HOURS” (6/3) (LEADER OF THE WALKMEN)

25. BOB MOULD-“BEAUTY & RUIN” (6/3) (**BOB MOULD's new album Beauty & Ruin is a twelve-track journey of loss, reflection, conciliation, and coming through the other side. It may very well be the most epic emotional roller coaster ever pressed into 36 minutes. Well into his fourth decade as a singer-songwriter, Mould is as relevant, ferocious, and poignant as he has ever been. Much of Beauty & Ruin deals with the passing of Mould's father in October 2012, Bob's struggle to come to terms with it, himself, and his own identity and legacy, and repercussions of all of the above on his ongoing relationships in the land of the living. Beauty & Ruin is a challenging work of raw beauty--and may well be Bob Mould's finest work since his 1989 solo debut, Workbook. In fall 2012, Bob gave the world Silver Age, his debut album for Merge Records and the first to feature current bandmates JASON NARDUCY and JON WURSTER. The subsequent touring covered four continents, ending in October 2013 in South America. Beauty & Ruin is in large part the sound of this band, on the road relentlessly, congealing into the tightest unit to surround Bob in his storied career. Two days after returning from South America, the trio reconvened in Chicago to begin the recording of Beauty & Ruin. The October 2013 session at Steve Albini's famed studio complex Electrical Audio consisted of nine days of band tracking and five days of layering guitars. The following month, Bob returned to Different Fur Studios in his hometown of San Francisco to finish lyrics for six songs, add vocals, and mix the album. Beauty & Ruin is a product of a survivor who refuses to give up, thrives through his work, and subsequently embraces the many changes around and within himself. Bob smartly declares the album as "yet another bonus round, and I am very grateful.")
26. PETER MURPHY-“LION” (LIMITED EDITION 2-CD) (6/3) (Iconic front man Peter Murphy spent most of 2013 celebrating 35 Years of Bauhaus on his Mr. Moonlight Tour, which saw him playing to sold-out shows around the world. In the midst of touring, Murphy also spent time recording the follow-up to 2011's solo album Nineth. The 2014 record, called Lion, was produced by Killing Joke bassist Youth.Murphy describes the Lion material as "a mixture of stuff, almost like operas for the dispossessed. It's very romantic and very deep and emotional, quite symphonic in places, but then becomes, like, a rabble-rousing pirate sea shanty.")
27. THE ORWELLS-“DISGRACELAND” (6/3)
28. PARQUET COURTS-“SUNBATHING ANIMAL” (DELUXE EDITION) (6/3)
29. RICH ROBINSON-“THE CEASELESS SIGHT” (6/3) (On the eve of the release of his third solo album, Rich Robinson, best known as the guitarist, songwriter, and founder of The Black Crowes, stands ready to complete the solo artist evolution that he began ten years earlier. The Ceaseless Sight is an album that represents the full maturation of Rich as a songwriter, vocalist, and solo artist. The album finds Robinson stepping solidly into his own as a solo artist as he adds confident vocalist and lyricist to his accomplished musical resume.)
30. SOUNDGARDEN-“SUPERUNKNOWN” (20TH ANNIVERSARY SUPER DELUXE EDITION 4-CD) (6/3)
