NEW RELEASES WEEK #26 JULY 2, 2013

JUNE 25 (WEEK #26)
1.    MATIAS AGUAYO-“VISITOR” (6/25)
2.    ALELA DIANE-“ABOUT FAREWELL” (6/25)
3.    JAY ARNER-“JAY ARNER” (6/25) (For years, Vancouver multi-instrumentalist Jay Arner has teamed up with others to translate the sounds in his head. He's fronted an indie rock band, played synthesizers and samplers in a pop duo, manned the drums for a piano-punk songwriter, and held down the bass in a eight-member collective. Along the way, he's also become a sought-after producer and remix artist, working out of Vancouver's legendary Hive Studios and recording acts like Mount Eerie, Apollo Ghosts, Rose Melberg, No Gold and many more. Now, finally, he is going it alone. Every sound on his eponymous debut album was self-recorded by Arner in his 72-square-foot practice space using a precariously perched desktop computer and his home recording gear. The sum of his many talents, these ten songs sizzle with DIY energy and encompass the scope of the songwriter's diverse resume.Opener "Midnight on South Granville" sets a dark tone with its coldly mechanical intro before flourishing into a lush post-punk synthscape that reflects Arner's love of analog electronics. Elsewhere, the bass-heavy pulse of "Broken Glass (In the Hall of Shattered Mirrors)" draws on '70s pseudo-funk, while "Wildest One" is an abrasive surge of distortion and "Don't Remind Me" is a soaring pop anthem that recalls classic Murderrecords songcraft. The lyrics are filled with self-doubt and wry cynicism, but don't expect confessional heartbreak--these timeless melodies and intricately wrought arrangements are filled with noisy pop sweetness, and there's not an acoustic guitar to be found.Given that Arner wrote, performed, recorded and mixed every note on the album, it's only fitting that it's self-titled. The cover artwork is a close-up photograph of the man's face. This is him at his most unfiltered and uncompromising, with only his musical whims to answer to."Jay Arner engages in some scuzzy, towering power-pop - an ode to emotional pain, smoldering guitars and a mile-long sludge of production that touches on a foreign era. Mostly, though, it's just a catchy summer jam that could form a perfect mixtape bridge.")

12. MAURICE DEEBANK-“INNER THOUGHT ZONE” (6/11) (1972 brings us the reissue of the 1984 debut solo album from Maurice Deebank, original guitarist of Felt, which was originally released on the seminal Cherry Red imprint. In classic form that made the English pop group, Felt, have their signature sound Deebank carries the same style over in his “Inner Thought Zone” release. This CD is filled with plenty of soundscapes that create some great mental imagery.) ***Maurice Deebank recorded his instrumental solo debut for the seminal Cherry Red imprint in 1984 while still the guitarist in Felt, the pastoral English pop group led by the notorious eccentric Lawrence Hayward (best known simply as Lawrence). Felt's early albums Crumbling the Antiseptic Beauty, The Splendour of Fear and Ignite the Seven Cannons and Set Sail for the Sun were marked by melancholy guitar interplay and a lofty pop sensibility, but Inner Thought Zone illustrates how significant Deebank's role was in crafting Felt's signature sound.Seven-minute album centerpiece "Silver Fountain of Paradise Square" and "Study No. 1" make beautiful use of supple arpeggios whimsically bent into cyclical structures in and around which Deebank weaves solos. His performance is nuanced and dynamic, undermining his own technical skill for the sake of expression, and it's easy to hear Inner Thought Zone as an exposition of the increasing introspection that led to his departure from Felt. Glistening chords, synthesizer flourishes and breezy plateaus of exaltation collide with the sense of loss and isolation generally explored by Deebank's peers in the post-punk era, but rarely with as much impeccable grace and finesse.

25. OVERSEAS-“OVERSEAS” (6/11) (The self-titled debut from indie supergroup Overseas is a dreamy waltz of foreboding and reconciliation, a coin flipping head over tails in spotlight slow motion, landing briefly on its edge before accepting that it s both sides at once if it s anything at all. Overseas is truly collaborative music made by old friends; Will Johnson of Centro-matic, David Bazan of Pedro the Lion, and brothers Matt and Bubba Kadane of Bedhead and The New Year. In these songs, you can hear them losing themselves in the moment, grabbing hold of fleeting ideas, holed up in the studio in the sweltering Texas night.)
