From the shifting-sand textures of 'Yoke' (replete with deeply moving, melancholic cello sifting through the ether) and 'Streaming Wisdom,' to the ever-so-slightly somber tones of 'Dead Bird,' Homegoing is a wondrously thought-provoking, uplifting aural adventure - a technicolor travelogue of things possibly lost, possibly not. File alongside latter-day Biosphere, Deathprod (especially both Helge Sten and Cristal's attention to the minutest sonic detail), and the later, electronically based Zoviet France releases. Pour a glass of your finest tipple, sit back and be transported to a very special dimension. Cristal's Homegoing has it all, and more.

The album, called Anarchic Breezes, was written around the central idea of a New Acoustic Death Folk, yet could be heard as equal parts Harry Smith and Harry Pussy. Both songwriters, Canadians now based in Los Angeles, come together on Anarchic Breezes to explore a mutual interest in the darker traditions of song and detuning found in the American Primitive Archives. The album features the ancillary rhythm section of ROB BARBATO (bass) and DAN ALLAIRE (drums), also L.A. musicians with roots deep in the modern psych movement. Anarchic Breezes was recorded by S. McBean at his home studio, with additional recording by ROB CAMPANELLA at the Jonestown Studios. It contains nine originals and one cover, the obscure "Leaving My Old Life Behind" by Jonathan Halper as featured in Kenneth Anger's "Puce Moment." It was mixed by MARK NEVERS (Will Oldham, Silver Jews, Calexico, Vic Chesnutt) at Beech House Studios in Nashville. The two voices on this album serve as mediums to a yet unheard music. Let the free ride the breeze.

Lanegan and Garwood met a few years ago while playing on the same bill and Garwood was again a frequent opener on Lanegan's recent European tour.
Garwood has often been described in the UK press as Lanegan's spiritual cousin across the Atlantic waters. He is praised in his home country as a master bluesman, with The Quietus saying the combination of Garwood's murmured vocals and the sound he gets out of his guitar - which ranges from a rolling, loose finger-picking to shuddering howls of feedback - has a hypnotic effect and The Mirror dubbing him as London's leading exponent of the wheezy broke-down blues.
Black Pudding was recorded at Pink Duck Studios in Burbank, Calif. by Justin Smith (Tegan and Sara, The Hives) and mixed by his Queens of the Stone Age associate Alain Johannes.

25. CARLA OLSON-“HAVE HARMONY, WILL TRAVEL” (4/30) Carla Olson co-founded the critically acclaimed group The Textones (with future Go-Go s bassist Kathy Valentine), of which Mikal Gilmore said, Carla Olson (who, wouldn t ya know, comes from Texas, where many wonderful things come from) combines John Fogerty-style, working-man populist politics with a grand, Rolling Stones-inflected bent for hellfire rock n roll, then manages to make both influences seem secondary, with a raw, growling irruptive vocal style that owes acknowledgement to no influence other than its own zeal and compassion. The Textones 1985 major-label debut included Ry Cooder, Gene Clark and Barry Goldberg, and was followed by 1987 s Cedar Creek. Olson worked on albums with Don Henley, John Fogerty, Eric Johnson and Sky Saxon, and released her solo debut in 1988. Her latest album, Have Harmony, Will Travel, follows 2002 s The Ring of Truth and consists of twelve cover songs, each featuring a duet with a guest vocalist Richie Furay (Poco, Buffalo Springfield), Juice Newton, John York (Byrds), Peter Case, James Intveld, Rob Waller and more. Instrumental backing on the album is provided by Clem Burke, Cindy Cashdollar, Mike Clinco, Skip Edwards, Tom Fillman, Barry Goldberg, Rick Hemmert, Tony Marsico, Tom Jr Morgan, Richard Podolor, Marty Rifkin, Pat Robinson and Gregg Sutton.

30. SOLAR BEARS-“SUPERMIGRATION” (4/30)  ***A real sense of drama runs through Solar Bears' music, and Supermigration, their second album following 2010's critically lauded She Was Coloured In, is full of all kinds--from the intimate to the psychedelic, from the chase to the suppression.Supermigration is the result of a year and a half spent on / off in a state-of-the-art studio in the Wicklow Mountains (a far cry from the bedroom setup where they produced their debut). Compositions were road-tested through a steady stream of live performances that saw John Kowalski and Rian Trench expanding Solar Bears from a duo into a full-scale band featuring members of I Am the Cosmos, Jape, Ships and Great Lakes Mystery. And don't overlook the two vocal-led highlights of the album featuring special guest appearances from Sarah P of Keep Shelly in Athens and the legendary Beth Hirsch (whose work here recalls her appearance on Air's Moon Safari). Supermigration proves that despite the strong acclaim around their debut, this Ireland-based duo was simply warming up.Occasionally one hears parallels in approach to the recent work of Broadcast and the Ghost Box crew, and Solar Bears' music also possesses an electronic sci-fi sheen as rich as their Planet Mu peers, but an emotive, nostalgic side to Supermigration also transcends the now, cutting a path through their diverse inspirations that include everything from Erik Satie to the Incredible String Band, from Cluster to Madlib. Kowalski rightly notes, "It's fair to say we listen to a lot of music from decades gone, but we get inspired far more from spontaneity in the studio."If pushed, Kowalski might also admit the cut "Cosmic Runner" (leaked a while ago on various sites including Pitchfork) was inspired directly by Robert Anton Wilson's Cosmic Trigger and that "Rainbow Collision" came from a "psychedelic daydream of two stained glass rainbows colliding over a Technicolor ocean...." Solar Bears are all about layers, a sense of movement and drama, brought about by a deep process that has resulted in one of the most exciting sophomore albums this year. Welcome to the trip.
